Sherwood Saints goalie Joel Inouye stops Saltfleet forward ...
Unfortunately for Saltfleet, Sherwood took advantage of a Storm giveaway in their own end and Mitch Nardi fired home the winning goal for the Saints about two minutes later.
The 4-3 victory at the Dave Andreychuk-Mountain Arena last Thursday gave Sherwood their second consecutive city championship and fifth crown in the past seven seasons.
“It was a tough loss today,” said Saltfleet forward Shawn Wood, who scored the tying goal for the Storm, his second of the game, with 1:56 to play in the third period.
Andrew Becker scored the other Saltfleet goal, while Brad Kenner, Nick Kuiper and Spencer Ryckman scored the other Sherwood goals.
“We kept coming back from a deficit the whole game and I felt the third period and especially in that overtime period, we were gaining more momentum, causing them to make mistakes,” said Storm head coach Paul Pendakis. “We had three or four opportunities that the puck should have went into the net.”
The last two minutes of the third and much of the overtime period featured exciting end-to-end action.
Saltfleet, who finished in third place during the regular season, advanced to the final by blanking second place Waterdown 5-0 in semi-final action.
The Storm should ice another strong club next season.
Pendakis said he expects most of his players will be back.
