Jenner scored at 1:07 of the second overtime period to lift Ontario Red to a 2-1 win over Team Quebec, after a turnover in the neutral zone that led to a breakaway.
“It couldn’t happen for a nicer person and what a great way to end her under-18 career,” said Ontario Red and Junior Sabres head coach Stacey Marnoch, of Jenner’s feat. “She just was a great leader all week, and so to cap it off with that is fantastic.”
Ontario Red opened the scoring at 14:09 of the first period, when Casandra Langan beat Quebec goaltender Roxanne Douville.
Ontario Red maintained its 1-0 lead until the 12-minute mark of the third period, when Quebec’s Marie- Philip Poulin scored from behind the net on a power play, banking in the puck off the pad of Ontario Red goaltender Cassie Seguin.
“Team Quebec is always very tough to play; you can always expect them to put up a good fight,” said Marnoch. “I think the ladies just came together as a team, given our limited amount of time together and we’re just a deep-talented province. The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association has done an awful lot for girl’s hockey and it shows.”
Fortino says Ontario Red’s win came down to hard work.
“Every shift, we went out there and we played as a team. We worked hard, we never gave up,” she said. “Everyone played their own role like they were supposed to, everyone did their own job and showed a lot of heart. Not a lot of people get the opportunity to do it and winning it feels great.”
Ontario Red ended the five-day tournament at 5-0, with Jenner scoring three goals and three assists and Fortino and Sullivan picking up two assists each.
“Team chemistry is huge and as a coaching staff and as a team, we spend a lot of time on team building and I think it paid off,” said Marnoch, of Ontario Red’s overall success.
Fortino agrees.
“We gelled pretty quick as a team,” she said. “We were pretty close, we had great team bonding and I think that helped us. We played great as a team.”
Marnoch says she couldn’t be more proud of the players.
“It was a great experience,” said Fortino. “I personally want to thank Stacey and Diane Boles (former Junior Sabres head coach). They were a great help.”
Junior Sabres goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater and defenceman Lauren Kelly hit the ice with Team Ontario Blue, which settled for a fourth-place finish in the eight-team tournament.
Junior Sabres forwards Jessica Wong and Jillian Saulnier were members of Team Atlantic, which dropped all four decisions. Saulnier was also named the tournament’s Most Sportsmanlike Player.
