
The Orchard Park Midget boys basketball team lost to Ancaster in the HWIAC finals Tuesday.
OP had a 15-10 first quarter lead, but got into some early foul trouble. The Patriots also fell victim to a speedy Ancaster, transition offence that led to easy Ancaster baskets. The Patriots were down three points at half-time.
In the second half, the Patriots struggled to finish offensive opportunities while Ancaster slowly pulled away. The Patriots lost 45-32.
OP had beat Westmount in the HWIAC semifinal game, putting on great defensive pressure and limiting Westmount's scoring oportunities.
In the second half, OP built a 16-point lead, until Westmount raced back. The Patriots hung on to defeat Westmount 47-42.
In the semifinal, the Patriots were led on the boards by Matt Jackson, James Klemp and Alex Teodorcevic. Ian Assing led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Klemp with 10 points.
The OP team, coached by Mark Lambert, Grade 10 student Faruk Golotic and Grade 9 student Wasse Wahidi, had a successful regular season record at 5-1 and beat MacNab in a double-overtime quarter-final game.
After two quarters, the score was tied 24-24 and with the final seconds ticking off the clock and Orchard Park down by two, Jackson ripped down an offensive rebound and scored the tying basket to send the game into overtime at 51-51.
In the first overtime, teams exchanged baskets and played aggressive defence. With the final seconds ticking off the clock and the game tied, Orchard Park had possession of the ball but was unable to capitalize and the game went into double overtime.
Orchard Park pulled away with a 69-59 victory.
The team's leading scorers for the game were Assing with 17 points and Teodorcevic with 16.
