The Bishop Tonnos girls
hockey team is headed back to the provincial championships after winning the
Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference title on March 10.
The Titans beat Oakville’s
Thomas A. Blakelock High School 2-1 in a sudden death three-on-three overtime
period to capture the GHAC championship. Kristen Barbara scored both BT goals.
The undefeated Titans found
themselves in an unfamiliar position when Blakelock took a 1-0 lead in the
second period.
Kristen Barbara tied the
game with a wrap-around goal to force overtime. She scored the game winner with
four minutes left in the extra session, assisted by Talia Paone
and Kristin Cavarzan.
“This was definetely the type of game we expected from Blakelock as they
defeated a very strong team in (Oakville’s) Loyola to qualify,” noted Titans
coach Dino Cavarzan. “Their (defence) moved the puck very well and their
goaltending was outstanding.”
To counter, Cavarzan said
the Titans fore checked aggressively, moved the puck and focused on a strong
defensive game.
“Our goals heading into the season were simple: play as hard as you can,
play as a team, and let the rest work itself out. For OFSAA,
our goal remains the same,” said
Cavarzan.
Bishop Tonnos is one of 15 teams competing at the AAA/AAAA OFSAA tournament in
Ottawa from March 23-26. Waterdown District High School has also qualified and
will represent Hamilton’s public school board.
On the road to the
provincial championships, the Titans captured the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic
Athletics Association trophy, their third straight city title. The Titans also
beat Loyola Secondary of Oakville in overtime en route to the GHAC title.
