Highway 8 was closed in both directions April 24 after a westbound vehicle drifted over the centre line, hitting an eastbound vehicle, which rolled over. The driver of the eastbound vehicle was trapped and had to be extricated.

On April 26, at about 1 p.m., Hamilton police were called to the Future Shop on Centennial Parkway for a theft.

A male was observed by store employees selecting and concealing more than $1,500 worth of cell phones and Bluetooth accessories and then fleeing the store. The employees chased after and caught the male and turned him over to police. All merchandise was recovered.

Charged with theft and possession and breach undertaking is Maxime Bedard, 18, of Boucherville, Que. It was discovered the male was facing similar charges in Quebec.

Careless driving

On April 24, at 3:35 p.m., Hamilton police, fire and ambulance responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 8 near Winona Road. The investigation revealed a vehicle driven by a 70-year-old woman was traveling east on Highway 8 when it collided with a westbound vehicle driven by a 50-year-old male.

The eastbound vehicle rolled over, trapping the driver, who had to be extricated.

Highway 8 was closed in both directions for more than two hours. It was found the westbound vehicle had drifted over the centre line.

Both drivers were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the westbound vehicle was charged with careless driving.

Bank of Montreal scandal

On April 23, at 11:45 a.m., the accused attended the Bank of Montreal to obtain a $3,000 fraudulent cash advance on a Mastercard. He was recognized by staff, from doing the same thing on April 17.

The accused presented a fraudulent Ontario driver's licence and Social Insurance Number card to obtain the cash advance. When he realized the police had been called, he fled the bank on foot.

The man was heard yelling into his cell phone to have his accomplice return and pick him up. He was followed by bank staff and other concerned citizens. He ran from police and fled to a local residential area. He was later located inside a dog house in a backyard on Strawberry Drive.

The BMO client card and a second Mastercard inside an envelope contained in a passport envelope were found in the driveway of that house.

Charged with numerous fraud offences is Paul O'Brien, 43, of no fixed address.
