First World War Facts

Almost 620,000 Canadian men and women served in the First World War at a time when the population of our country’s population was only a few million. More than 66,000 were killed.

Four Canadians were awarded the Victoria Cross for their part in capturing Vimy Ridge.

Canadian John McCrae wrote the poem "In Flanders Fields" while on the battlefield.

Second World War Facts

Canadian soldiers formed the main assault force for the raid on Dieppe, including a large contingent from the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. More than 900 Canadians (197 RHLI soldiers) were killed and almost 2,000 more were taken prisoner.

Approximately 14,000 Canadians landed at Normandy on D-day.

The 1st Canadian Army was instrumental in the Liberation of Holland in May 1945.

More than one million Canadians served in the Second World War and approximately 45,000 gave their lives.

Canadians in Korea, 1950-1953

A total of 26,791 Canadians served in the Korean War and another 7,000 served in the theatre between the ceasefire and the end of 1955. Canadian fatal and non-fatal battle casualties numbered 1,558. The names of 516 Canadian war dead are inscribed in the Korea Book of Remembrance.

Peacekeeping

More than 100 Canadians have died in various peacekeeping missions since the Korean War.
