Make lands more accessible to increase public support

About a year ago, I read about the Eramosa Karst in the Stoney Creek News and curiosity got the better of me.

My son and I decided to see if we could find this rare and interesting geological feature. Armed with a vague set of directions, we went in search to see if we could experience this for ourselves.

The first thing we saw was a No Trespassing sign. Not terribly encouraging, but we forged on. We had the good fortune of meeting along the trail, a contributor to the story we had read, however he was showing some of theses anomalies to another person and as such he was unable to direct us to the Nexus Cave but gave us directions to a smaller cave, not far from where we met.

My son was impressed, having never actually seen a cave. We also saw streams that disappeared underground and numerous sink holes. This is obviously something that needs to be protected from development, where some may see a geological treasure, others will only see obstacles that need to be levelled for the sake of development.

The first step of course, is public awareness and while an opening soon may be sufficient for the political world, a No Trespassing sign on public lands is certainly not going to encourage the public to support something they have never seen or been allowed to see.

Perhaps a feature on TV or some type of tour of the area might help sway public opinion more than a No Trespassing sign ever will.

For the record, we never found the Nexus Cave, apparently one of the top 10 in North America. We'll have to save that for the next time we go trespassing on public lands.
