Stoney Creek candidate promises more public meetings

Stoney Creek council candidate Bernard Josipovic says a local politician needs to be visible to the people they represent.

Describing himself as a “fresh face”, the Ward 10 candidate, who is challenging political veteran Maria Pearson who has held the council seat since 2003, says he will hold public meetings every two weeks in the ward, and will create a community council similar to the ones that are operating in Ancaster and Dundas to give residents a political voice.

“I have never met the councillor,” said Josipovic, 29, referring to Pearson. “I can tell you that people will know who I am. I will definitely have my face out there, knocking on every door.”

Josipovic, who has worked at Stelco, Dofasco, and Y108, and is now involved in the film production and arts community, is making his first venture into politics. He entered the race because neighbours and friends are complaining about the direction Hamilton is going in.

“I want to do something different,” says Josipovic, who lives in the ward. “People asked me why I don’t do something.”

He says if elected he would fight to remove the truck route designation along Fruitland Road. Allowing trucks to travel along the route affects the entire neighbourhood, he says, including “ruining our air.”

The entire animosity between councillors and Fruitland Road homeowners that resulted in protests, and name-calling, could have been avoided, he says, if there had been better communications.

“Councillors should listen to the people,” he says.

Josipovic also opposes the recently installed parking meters in downtown Stoney Creek, calling it a “money grab” by the city.

As for creating jobs for the area, he would like to relocate the films that are usually shot in Dundas, or downtown Hamilton to Stoney Creek.

“We have a nice beach area, and other good locations here,” he said. “We should be getting the productions in our ward.”

Besides Josipovic, Jose Pablo Bustamante is also challenging Pearson for the ward 10 seat.
