Heavy metal meets pop is a sound recognizable to the fans of Illuminate the Sky says the band’s Stoney Creek based lead singer, Josh Tiller.

“I think what I bring is more of a poppiness to the heaviness and the people who like soft music can like the heaviness of the band.”

Cory Rodgers, guitar player said he agrees about what Tiller’s voice brings to theband.

“We wanted to keep heavy with our sound, but we wanted a real singer, someone even our mom and dad could understand,” he said.

Other band members include Kayvon Saremi on guitar, Mike Chereshnevsky on bass and Fraser Stephenson on drums.

Rodgers and Saremi came up with the name, which is a metaphor attached to a variety of different interpretations.

“To us it was an epic vision and it also had a metaphor of you being the light in life that lets other people get hope from you. We want to be worldwide one day,” said Rodgers.

Rodgers adds that the band does not have one particular message it hopes to get across to fans, but rather individual ones.

“The message would be to go after your goals and move forward with your life.”

This message and many more can be heard on the band’s album, which is to be released later this year.

“We will have individual messages within each song rather than one bigger message,” said Rodgers.

Although the band has no label rep, it receives support from across Ontario in cities like Cobourg and Cambridge.

“I’ve been in bands for years and this is the first time it has caught on this fast,” he said.

Saremi agrees with Rodgers when it comes to the success of the band.

“We just started the band last year in September and we are just doing really well,” said Seremi.

Rodgers said the band’s success can be attributed to the history of its members belonging to many former bands.

“We really feel this is it for us and we are definitely professional now. We all really love this music and that is the biggest achievement.”

Chereshnevsky said the fact that the members have all been friends for quite some time also helps.

The band has many upcoming shows for the month of February, including a six-day tour across Ontario. For band information or to download the band’s four-song demo, visit www.myspace.com/illuminatethesky .
