The team is sitting in fourth place, just three points behind Thorold and is sporting a respectable 8-5 record, having won eight consecutive games.
“After a rough start, everyone is starting to buy into the system now,” said forward and the team’s leading scorer Jordan Gignac. “Guys are understanding what their roles are and everything’s kind of gelling together.”
The Warriors skated past Thorold 5-1 last Wednesday, going three for six on the power-play.
Forward David Ruberto opened scoring in the first period at the 11:13 mark, netting a power-play goal assisted by forwards Mitchell Merante and Marcus Ruberto.
Gignac added two more power-play goals in the second period: one at the 11:08 mark assisted by forward Kevin Rebelo and defenceman Cody Wilson and another at 13:11, assisted by Rebelo and defenceman Mike McNamara. Thorold forward Paul Sirignano finished off the scoring in the second period at the 18:54 mark, netting a goal assisted by defenceman Andrew Babiarz and forward Tanner Goode.
Warrior forward Rob Elmer added another goal in the third period at the 1:57 mark assisted by Marcus Ruberto and Merante sealed the deal at the 19:41 mark, with an unassisted goal. “Everyone was doing their jobs, everyone kept their feet moving, we were winning battles,” said Gignac. “That was probably one of our best games of the year.”
The Warriors followed up last Wednesday’s win with a 7-0 shutout over Wheatfield on Saturday.
Forward Kyle Aquin, Ruberto, Gignac (2), Elmer, forward Tyler VanKleef and Rebelo all scored for the Warriors. The team outshot Wheatfield 34-17.
“We played pretty well,” said Gignac. “We just wanted to keep that streak rolling and get that perfect month of October in.”
The Warriors will be put to the test on Saturday, when they take on Niagara Falls, who are sitting in second place, just one point behind St. Catharines.
“They beat us in the first game of the year, so we’re going to have something to prove,” said Gignac. “We’re just going to have to keep playing the way we are and stay focused,” he added. “We’re going to be fired up.”
With the playoffs on the horizon, Gignac says the team will continue to stay the course.
“We’re just taking it one game at a time,” he said. “We don’t want to think too far ahead.”
The Warriors will take on Niagara Falls on Saturday (Nov. 7) at 7:30 p. m. at Valley Park Arena.
