A few of Hamilton’s deteriorating recreation facilities will be getting a financial makeover starting this summer.
The provincial and federal governments are scheduled to announce July 2 the city will be receiving “well over” $5 million in recreation infrastructure stimulus funding.
“We are still making sure everybody is being contacted,” said Hamilton Mountain Liberal MPP Sophia Aggelonitis. “We are very excited.”
She said the funding will go towards “several projects”, but the first-term MPP refused to identify the recreation facilities.
Last week the federal and provincial governments announced they will be spending a combined $380 million for 758 recreation projects in Ontario.
In May Hamilton councillors approved an application to the federal government’s stimulus program for $84 million, which would involve fixing up 26 recreation facilities. The top priorities city staff identified for the funding include Allan MacNab Recreation Centre, Sir. Wilfrid Laurier Recreation Centre, Turner Park Sports Field, Hill Park Recreation Centre, Scott Park Arena and expanding the Winona Seniors facility.
Under the federal Recreational Infrastructure Canada program, projects have to be “shovel ready” and be completed within two years by March 2011.
