The clock is now ticking towards the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Stoney Creek in 2013. There is a lot of work to be done to ensure we can do this commemoration justice.
Will we be ready? Yes. Council has budgeted $150,000 per year to prepare for this event. In 2009 we are planning the reconstruction of King Street from Battlefield Drive to Nash Road. This still needs to be approved during the 2009 capital budget deliberations but we hope that council supports it.
The Nash Jackson house is just about complete at which point the old administration building will be taken down.
A Stoney Creek business gateway will be placed on the corner of Centennial Parkway and King highlighting the battlefield.
The old garage currently used by Public Works staff is actually the carriage house that was used for the horses that hauled stone to construct the monument. It is my hope that this feature will be restored and used as an educational classroom.
Centennial Parkway will be rebuilt complete with a new sewer system through 2010-2011. If all goes according to plan, we will be ready with a new look to the park and gateway to Stoney Creek by 2012, in time for our celebration.
