The 2008 National Women's Under 18, Ontario Women's Hockey Association and Provincial Women's Hockey League championships are just a few of the accomplishments Stoney Creek Junior Sabres captain and forward Kelly Sabatine has under her jersey and she's about to add one more.
The 17-year-old will represent the OWHA and Hockey Canada Aug. 10 to 17 at the 2008 IIHF Hockey Development Camp in Vierumaki, Finland.
One of only four Canadians chosen, Sabatine will join players, coaches, managers and officials from 37 national associations in on and off-ice teaching and learning sessions that include both the theoretical and practical aspects of the game.
While the camp formula is well established, this season will only be the second time the model has been expanded to include the women's game.
"It is a big honour to be chosen to go," said Sabatine. "There are thousands of talented girls in Ontario that they could have picked and they picked me, so I couldn't be happier."
The camp is open to female players born from 1990 to 1992 selected by participating member national associations.
Junior Sabres head coach Stacey Marnoch says Sabatine was chosen by the OWHA not only for her exceptional skill level but because she exemplifies the values of the association.
"She will be expected to learn as much as she can and bring what she's learned back to the OWHA, her organization and her team," she said.
Sabatine says she's most looking forward to meeting girls from different countries.
"I'm looking forward to seeing what the different countries do and how they train," she said. "I'm also looking forward to possibly making some new friends."
Sabatine says one thing she's not looking forward to is the plane ride.
"I'm very nervous about flying alone, it's a long way from home," she said. "Also, because I'm from Canada, a lot of people will be watching me and what I do, so I'm a little nervous about that as well. But I know that there will be a lot of great people there."
Marnoch says she's really excited for Sabatine.
"This is such an amazing opportunity," she said. "I think the OWHA has made an excellent choice. Kelly will represent herself, the OWHA and the Junior Sabres well. She has the leadership skills and work ethic to use and share the things she learns at the camp with everyone, when she gets home."
