Is the only form of activity you're getting walking from the TV to the refrigerator? Is your Wii tennis game filling your lungs with fresh air?
It's time to put down the TV remote and the Wii controller. The great outdoors with real tennis racquets and real people is being offered at a fraction of the cost.
We've all tried diets and counting carbs. We've all bought exercise equipment that turn into clothes racks. For many of us getting fit, it's often anything but enjoyable. When was the last time you heard someone say abdominal crunches are fun? This season, commit to be fit by combining fun with fitness at the Stoney Creek Tennis Club.
Tennis is an all-over workout, burning an average of 498 calories an hour. In fact, tennis ranks among the top five activities for most calories burned per workout. There is no better activity to help you achieve cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, balance, speed, agility and eye-hand coordination. Tennis keeps your body moving and your heart pumping. Just think, covering the baseline in tennis means you won't have to cover your waistline.
At the Stoney Creek Tennis Club, there's something for everyone, no matter your age or ability level. The club offers men's and ladies leagues, round robins, club tournaments, travel teams, fun tournaments with social events and barbecues, plus tennis camps for children, an academy for children and teens and tournaments just for kids.
If you've never played tennis, the Stoney Creek Tennis Club has complimentary lessons for new members, both juniors and adults on Sunday, May 18 and Sunday, May 25. After that, seasoned members will gladly share tennis tips.
The King family recently joined the Stoney Creek Tennis Club.
"I was a little concerned when I first joined since my husband and I hadn't played tennis since high school," says Jacqueline King. "But everyone was friendly, very welcoming. No one was judgmental."
The Stoney Creek Tennis Club is open from May 1 to Sept. 30, depending on the weather. On opening day, Saturday, May 24, there is a '50s themed round robin and barbecue and on Saturday, June 8, is the couples' tournament.
Membership prices are, adults, $115, couples, $220, seniors, $85, students, $65, juniors, $39 and a family membership, $265.
