Members of the the Labourers International Union of North America 837 took part in the annual Labour Day Parade in downtown Hamilton Sept. 1. The parade attracted about 2,500 participants, and 12 different unions as they marched along Main and Bay streets. The march finished at Dundurn Park where they listened to speeches and had an afternoon picnic.
The Saltfleet Crush soccer team travelled to Montreal to participate in the prestigious Challenge Brossard Tournament on the August long weekend. The team faced some of the strongest competition from both Quebec and Ontario on route to winning the championship. The final was a thrilling match against the Woodbridge Strikers with the Crush prevailing 3-2. Last Wednesday, 32 Hamilton Emergency Services volunteer firefighter recruits participated in a graduation ceremony at the Hamilton Firefighters Drum Corps Facility. The recruits completed more than 260 hours of training that involved over 50 different live fire scenarios. They will respond to alarms from different stations across the city, including Station 14, 15, 16 and 17 (Stoney Creek); Station 18 (Binbrook); Station 19 (Mount Hope); Station 21 (Ancaster); Station 24 (Waterdown); Station 25 (Greensville); Station 26 (Lynden); and Station 28 (Freelton). "By successfully completing their training course, these recruits now have the skills and knowledge required to respond to emergency situations," said Hamilton Emergency Services general manager and chief Jim Kay. "I am extremely proud of what they have accomplished so far and I know that they are looking forward to actively protecting and serving the citizens of Hamilton."
