Memorial School students share their experiences with Roots of Empathy program.
Last Friday, St. Francis Xavier Catholic elementary school Grade 7 students Alyssa Sultana and Makayla Gemin had their hair cut for Locks of Love, a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss. The students had been growing their hair for three years for the cause. The school also raised money for student Taylor Beraldo, who has Niemann-Pick Type C, a rare metabolic disorder for which there is no cure. Flowers and stuffed animals were left by the front door of the Smith family home on East 11th last week after a traffic accident in Virginia claimed the life of Bill Smith and his wife Sandra Smith, both 35, and their seven-year-old daughter Kaylee.

The Top Dog U10 girls' spring hockey team is an elite group of AAA players from across Ontario and the United States, including Stoney Creek's Sarah Jerome on defence and Serena D'Angelo in net, with head coach Brad Jerome behind the bench. The Top Dog team won the Canlan Summer Chill Tournament June 20 to June 22, outscoring the opposition 30-2. This is the second straight tournament win for the girls, who remain undefeated over two seasons of play.
