Lakeview Retirement Centre has joined with others in the Chosen Soldier Project to show support for Canadian soldiers. Along with photos and words of encouragement, residents have put together care packages to send overseas. Residents hope to provide comfort from home and remind the troops of their ongoing support.

Last Friday, family and friends attended the third annual Gary Chambers Memorial Rugby Game at Saltfleet District High School, where the 2005 gold medal alumni team took on the 2008 senior team. Gary played rugby at Saltfleet for five years and was involved with three provincial championships. Gary died suddenly on Oct. 28, 2005. He was 19. "My biggest fear was when you lose somebody that they're going to be forgotten, because life goes on," said Gary's mom Nancy. "But when I see this type of a turnout and just the camaraderie of everybody coming together, wanting to be here, it just makes you feel good." Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic elementary school's grades four to eight all-girls and co-ed cheerleading squads competed at the Power Cheerleading Athletics Canada's Wonderland Competition last month. The all-girls squad, made up of 19 athletes placed third, while the co-ed squad of 24 athletes scored second. Last Sunday, Valley Park Aquatic Centre held its second annual Slide-A-Thon to kick off June is Recreation Month. The event raised $225 for the Lifesaving Society's Water Smart Drowning Prevention Campaign, which encourages individuals in high-risk groups to exercise safe and responsible behaviours in and around the water to prevent water-related injuries. The centre will hold an under the sea event today (June 6) and a treasure hunt with games and prizes on June 13 in support of the campaign. Both events will take place from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
