On Wednesday, March 3, students at Winona Public School presented Canadian Red Cross representative Julie Guthrie with a cheque for $1450. The funds, which were raised via a Little Caesar Pizza Kit initiative, will go to the Haiti relief effort. Pictured with Guthrie are Grade 5 student Mackenzie and Grade 1 student Hunter, as well as classmates. Pictured right, members of the student leadership group did their part and raised $2000 for the efforts. 205005 Mini olympics Students and staff of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Elementary School participated in an Olympics of their own last month. One of the highlights was a presentation by one of the torchbearers, Les Myers, who ran through Thorold. Students were given the details of his journey leading up to and including his run and were able to touch the torch. The 23-year-old is awaiting official confirmation of her qualification for the Provincial Winter Games next year in Thunder Bay. The ride is a two-hour, team-based indoor cycling challenge and fundraising event dedicated to raising money for oncology camps, community support programs, research scholarships and other areas, which contribute to inspiring hope and improving prognoses for children and their families impacted by cancer. Students and staff raised more than $4,300 for Camp Trillium. Pictured here, Grade 10 student and Wolf Pack team member Matthew Stapleton sweats it out for the cause. 205016 Hands of Hope winner On Feb. 20, Rebecca Hill, a student at Mohawk College, was the grand prize winner at the second annual Hands of Hope Contest hosted by Leggat Pontiac Buick Cadillac Ltd. in Burlington. Ten students from Mohawk, Sheridan and McMaster took part in the contest to win a car. All were chosen for their community accomplishments. Students had to place their hand on the car Feb. 19 and carry on overnight until the last hand was left on the car. In the end, eight of 10 remained in the contest until the bitter end, and a draw was held to determine the eventual winner. Other participants were awarded a prize package, and included Stephanie Balon, Jaime DeSantis, Kasia Niton, Courtney Anderson, Emma Alguire, Leah Maurizo, Robin Kwan, Chris Erl and Christa Austin.
